Colder temperatures have arrived up and down the East Coast. Now is the time to make sure you, and your vehicle, are prepared for winter roads.
Regular vehicle maintenance and upkeep are always recommended, but it is especially important in the winter months.
Tip for Winterizing Your Car
Schedule a Check-Up
Before the snow flies, schedule an appointment with a certified mechanic. At this check-up, make sure they check all fluids, including the oil, antifreeze, washer fluid, and ask them to refill/replace if needed.
Install Winter Tires
In southeast Pennsylvania, temperatures regularly fall below 45 degrees, the temperature range when special winterized tires are recommended. While winter tires are highly recommended to keep your vehicle in good condition, and you and your family safe, they aren’t always the most affordable option. The most important winter tip for your tires is to check the tread and the pressure weekly. The right tire pressure for your vehicle will be located on the inside of the driver’s door. For tread, you can check this with a penny. If you can see the top of Abe’s head, it is time for new tires.
Pack a Kit
The best preparation during the winter is to prepare for the worst. Before winter begins, pack a kit of the top essentials you may need if you get stranded. The supplies we highly recommend keeping in your car are:
-
-
-
- Extra blankets (wool if possible)
- Warm clothes
- Water
- Non-Perishable Food Items
- Radio
- Flashlights and Flashers
- Extra Batteries
- Orange Cones (to increase the visibility of your car)
- Jumper Cables
- First-Aid Kit
-

Winter Wipers
Get in the habit of raising your wipers off the windshield when parking outdoors, and never use them to remove ice and snow from the windshield. Don’t put the wipers back down until the hood and windshield are free of ice and snow.
